School Scholarships for Slum Children

Children from the slums are the most disadvantaged children with the fewest opportunities in Kenyan society. Globewise helps here by offering these children school scholarships. With an unemployment rate of 70%, however, it is still very difficult to find a job, even after completing school. The local organization Good News Centre Kenya, therefore, teaches the children important additional skills through their life skills lessons that will help the children to develop further. In these lessons children are challenged to think about what is important to them and the people around them in and think about what choices they want to make in life. Due the cramped size of houses in the slums doing homework is difficult and, therefore, the organisation supervises homework and learning after school. Young people are also assisted in finding internship addresses and in looking for and finding a job.

Schooling and School Meals for Rural Children

Globewise has been supporting projects in Thika, in Kenya, for a number of years aimed at schooling poor children who grow up in slums and rural areas.

In order to encourage the children to stay in education, our local partner has set up various projects. Many children do not get enough to eat at home, which means that they are hungry at school, to the detriment of their performance in class.

Vocational Education for Homeless Girls

The Kenyan organization Pendekezo Letu takes care of homeless girls. They come from the slums of Nairobi and Thika and the surrounding rural areas.

The girls being cared for are between 6 and 14 years old and whilst living on the streets they have often become addicted to drugs. The girls spend 10 months living in a shelter where they receive rehabilitation treatment and are prepared for going (back) to school. These girls have ended up on the streets for a reason and are usually traumatized. Returning to their families after the rehab period is, therefore, carefully supervised by social workers who maintain regular contact over the course of 3 years with the girls and their families. Once reinstated back at home the girls go to primary or secondary school or follow a vocational training course. The families receive, if necessary, for the following 3 years, a contribution towards the costs of school including school fees, school uniforms, exam fees, etc. The plan is eventually to also help brothers and sisters.
